about

Ronnie Lee Cunningham is another classic tale of “almost famous”. This single was this Youngstown native’s first recordings when he was only 14 years old. He quickly rose through the local scene fronting the band Brainchild, his own combo, and later most notably joining LAW, who released three LPs, two on MCA. But without a hit single the band fizzled out and Ronnie tried throughout the late 70’s and 80’s to get a solo career going in LA. Unfortunately nothing took. He did however continue writing, recording and performing until his death in 2020. (We plan to release a full compilation of his recordings in the near future.)

This single showcases kid Ronnie Lee punching away on a combo organ. A funky, soulful, organ trio blues with his cousin Frank Queener on guitar. This 1966 cut would be equally at home in any questionable strip club owned by the mafia or at the hippest teen dance club (likely also owned by the mafia). There’s also an open drum break at 1:37 (if you’re into that kinda thing).
